How to Buy and Install Batting Cage Turf

Artificial turf withstands heavy use. Installing it in your batting cage enhances its lifespan as well as protects your ground and improves player safety. Suitable for both outdoor and indoor use, you can install it on a variety of surfaces including grass, clay and cement. Additionally, it gives your field a fresh, attractive look with minimal maintenance.

Artificial turf is showing up in sports facilities all over the world for these 3 main reasons:

More practice time: Outdoor varieties have special drainage features that allow water to run off into the ground below. This means practices are no longer subject to weather conditions. You can use the cage almost immediately after it has rained.

Enhanced safety and performance: The constant hits from high velocity balls and digging of the cleats can create pits in the field, which make for a tripping hazard. It absorbs impact reducing ball ricochet which causes injury and damages playing equipment. Safer playing conditions allow players to focus on improving their game skills.

Reduced field maintenance costs: Mowing, fertilizing, reseeding and repairing large areas of damaged grass are a major expense that also cut into practice time. Low-maintenance artificial turf can last for up to 10 years, eliminating or reducing your maintenance effort and cost.

Tips for Purchasing and Installing Artificial Grass

Width: Typically, turf rolls are either 12’ wide or 15’ wide.  Most often, the concrete area that you want to cover is narrower or wider, so you will need to be prepared for some wastage. The artificial grass rolls are seamed to fill larger areas, but the idea is to have the least amount of seams possible. Length is not a problem as we have a variety of options to suit your needs.

Pile: Keep in mind that the higher the turf pile, the tighter the fibers and longer it will last. We stock piles ranging from 22 oz. to 40 oz.  Even our 22 oz. variety is higher quality that what you would find at a big box store.

Installation: Artificial turf is directional. This means you must pay attention to the direction of fibers during installation. You want all the rolls to run in the same direction and not perpendicular to each other. This will give your facility a neat and attractive appearance. Installing turf is quite similar to carpet. If you are not confident of doing this, a carpet installer can help.
