Baseball Batting Cages: Which one for the Field and Which is for Home?

The batting cage you purchase for your private backyard is not the same as the one you will need for your high school, college, or park facility. That is because the use, frequency and durability requirements are much different. Also, when purchasing a baseball batting cage for a high school, you may need a different level of durability as compared to the one you need for a little league field. To help differentiate between all of the options, you must begin by understanding the main components of a batting cage and which are ideal for what type of game situation.

The Components of Baseball Batting Cages

Backyard batting cages provide you with an opportunity to improve your hitting performance without having to drive to a city park. To find the right cage for your facility or home, here are a few things you will need to consider:

  • Netting – Netting is critical. After all, this is what stops the ball. High schools will typically use #36 nylon netting or polyethylene for their batting cages. Backyard units, on the other hand, do not need such durability. A backyard batting cage could get away with a #21 nylon or polyethylene instead. This is because at-home cages will not be used as frequently as those on a school or recreational field. Obviously, with the #21 netting the price will decrease as well.
  • Frame – The frame is the most important element of any batting cage. It is what provides structure and support. For both backyard and regular batting cages, you want a frame that is durable, which often means choosing a metal frame. While fiberglass could be durable, metal frames are built for longevity and will not warp when struck by a ball. Just make sure that the metal frame you purchase is built to withstand harsh weather, such as galvanized steel.
  • ·         Size – The size of the overall cage will vary as well. Baseball batting cages used at a complex or facility can be much larger than those in your backyard. The size you use at home will depend on how much space you have to work within your backyard.
