How to Choose Batting Cage Nets

This piece of field equipment offers benefits for baseball and softball players of all levels.

Beginners can develop proper hand-eye coordination and swing mechanics.

More seasoned players can improve their batting speed and strength.

Professionals can use it for warm ups and to improve flexibility, in addition to the above-mentioned benefits.

With the wide variety of options available, it is not easy to decide on the right one for your players and field conditions. Our sports specialists have highlighted 3 important points to keep in mind when purchasing practice nets.

Choose the right size: This involves determining the available space. Remember that your net cannot take up too much space as your pitcher needs room to throw and the batter requires space to swing.

Select a style: Square cages are very popular with high school and college coaches. The main reasons for this are: better visibility for the batter, easy installation and longer lifespan. It is especially good for bunting drills as the batter can see the flight and placement of the ball when compared to enclosures with regular widths of 12’ or 14’.  We offer customized solutions to match your specific size requirements.

Invest in a quality frame and netting: Choose a sturdy frame to support the net. Mesh quality is equally important as it impacts both ball retrieval and player safety. Available in nylon and polyethylene, the thicker the twine, the stronger your netting and the longer it will last. While #21 is a good basic strength, #36 is ideal.

Benefits of Square Netting

This type is a favorite with minor and major league coaches. Let’s see why.

Easy to install: Since it hangs straight and to exact dimensions without a border installed, there is less pulling and stretching to be done. You will get a neater finish when compared to a diamond mesh.

Longer lasting: It has neater edging as the border follows to the edge of the netting. This means less wear.

Easier to see: Spectators are as important to the game as your players. The square pattern makes it easier for viewers to see the game from the bleachers/stands as compared to the diamond one.

Easier installation and better visibility have made square baseball netting the popular choice of minor and major league coaches. At Richardson Athletics, we have a full range of netting products to meet your needs. Whether you are looking for nylon or polyethylene nets, our product quality and service are second to none.

Over the years, the square batting cage has become a true favorite with players and coaches.  Hitting from the corner helps your players to receive immediate feedback. They can see balls hit to all fields or you can place bunts directionally towards 1st or 3rd base. We treat the netting throughout with our Inside/Out 2X Treatment Process. It is initially dyed black and bonded through an extrusion process during manufacturing. This treats the inner fibers of each strand of netting. The next step involves latex-treatment which produces an outer layer of protection. This increases abrasion resistance and provides the ultimate protection against damage caused by ultraviolet rays and the weather, so you can look forward to maximum net life. The cage features 1-7/8″ square mesh made from major league (#36) knotted nylon netting. It is very well supported and comes completely rope bordered, top and bottom, with additional ropes (approximately 6-7 ft apart) running along the top of the cage. You will notice a leadcore rope at the bottom which is put in place to contain balls. For entry, there is an easy-to-enter opening in one corner with a 2-ft. overlap of netting providing greater safety.
