Types of Batting Cage Turf

The turf used within the batting cage is a synthetic material that works well for indoor and outdoor applications. This type of ground cover is economical, attractive and ideal for sports, batting cages, athletic facilities, and even for social events.

Why Use Artificial Turf?

Most facilities have artificial turf in their batting cages because:

  1. It is environmentally-friendly
  2. It is manufactured specifically to be long-lasting and extremely durable
  3. It requires less maintenance and maintenance-associated costs than real grass
  4. It protects the balls from scuff marks, tears, etc. compared to concrete pads without turf

The Different Types to Choose From

There are two artificial turf categories that can be placed in your batting cages:

  1. Padded TurfMade from long-lasting, durable polypropylene or polyethylene fibers (depending on the type you choose), which has a cushion pad ranging from 3mm to 5mm.
  2.  Unpadded TurfMade from long-lasting, durable polypropylene or polyethylene fibers (depending on the type you choose) and mainly used for larger areas inside and outside.

Installing Turf

Once you have picked which type of turf you want, you still have to decide how to install it. There are three main ways you can install these artificial mats:

  1. Simply place it in the batting cage and do not adhere it to anything. This method is not usually recommended, however, because it can easily curl up.
  2. Double stick tape can be used on indoor areas every few feet around the underside of the turf.
  3. Glue is without a doubt the best way to adhere the turf to the surface. Some people use the glue where the seams are located and many others will use the glue on every square inch for durability and longevity.
